雖然去年選出的新世界七大奇認受性成疑，但約旦佩特拉古城（Petra）的巧奪天工，卻無可置疑。這個擁有二千多年歷史的古城，在天然岩壁之上雕鑿而成，曾經是叱一時的納巴泰王國首都，亦是羅馬帝國重要的領地之一，就連《聖經》中亦對它有不少描述。其後顯赫古城被沙土埋藏了千多年，至十八世紀才再次被發現，身世之神秘迷離，簡直有如一九八九年在此拍攝的《聖戰奇兵》電影劇情。

雖然佩特拉古城在十八世紀才被瑞士探險家伯克哈特發現，但對於這個曾經盛極一時的城邦，早在《聖經》中有不少記載。Petra在希臘文中解作岩石，而《舊約全書》中摩西「出埃及記」點石出水的地方塞拉，亦同樣有岩石的意思，因此有學者認為兩者極有可能是同一個地方。
